Arriving by air?
Hinton Airfield is strictly PPR! Please visit www.hintonairfield.co.uk for information on obtaining permission.
Occasionally, visitors to come in from other airfields and do fly in. Below is some valuable information that may come in useful. Hinton-In-The-Hedges airfield is a privately owned airfield, with both paved and grass strips- it features intense parachuting activity, and gliding during the weekends. Take extreme care, and maintain a good lookout for gliders, parachutists and other traffic.
Hinton Airfield:
Hinton Radio is 119.45: note that no air traffic services are provided, and all movement is carried out under the pilot's discretion. Intentions and circuit position should be broadcast to Hinton Radio.eg inbound, downwind, base, final, runway vacated.
Powered circuits for the main hard runway 06/24 are normally carried out to the North. Gliders and tugs generally circuit to the south, taking off and landing on the grass: gliders and tugs often use the grass runways adjacent to the old hard runways 09/27 and 33 (landing only) even when other traffic is using 06/24. They also use grass 06/24, adjacent to 06/24 hard.
If gliders are launching 09 then they usually land 06 grass. If the gliding club is launching on grass runway 27, landings by gliders and tugs will usually be on grass runway 33. Landings are normally never carried out on grass runway 15.
Freefall parachuting takes place over the field from up to FL130, so no overhead joins; call 'Hinton DZ' on the airfield frequency prior to approach for current activity.
When the gliding club is operating, in the interests of safety it determines the direction of take off and landing for the airfield as a whole. For example, if gliders are taking off 09, then the hard runway in use is 06.
